Corel Introduces Corel® Painter™ X

Corel today announced Corel® Painter™ X, the latest incarnation of one of the best natural media centric software tools for digital artists. Painter™ X can now be preordered at Corel and Corel UK . New tools include performance improvements, new composition tools in the form of Divine Proportion and their powerful and innovative RealBristle™ Painting System that provides bristle level control over their organic painting and illustration tools. They've also made substantial improvements to the way Painter allows you to turn photos into works of art.

I've been a long time fan of Painter and looking forward to trying it out. For more information visit Corel. I think the only complaint here is the relatively high price in UK £ when compared to the US Price and conversion rate.

Sam Haskins

Sam Haskins is a photographer whose work has graced the pages of many fashion magazines and advertising campaigns. A prize winning photographer and early imageer whose work features the human form, still lifes, travelogues, surrealist influences and graphically powerful compositions.

He was one of the first photographers to pioneer the production and publishing of photographic essays. His first book Five Girls - 1962, created quite a stir when it was published in the early 60's. His second book Cowboy Kate and Other Stories - 1964, was so well received it was awarded the Prix Nadar.

Sam has been at the forefront of the creative manipulation of photography and has been especially innovative in his use of non digital techniques. Sam is also a convert to digital and spends many hours working with Photoshop. I've been told he continues to shoot with his much loved Pentax 6x7 and scanning his negatives and transparencies with an Imacon and printing on an Epson 7800. The first week of 2007 has kicked into gear with a number of announcements and product updates. With the CES show about to kick off next week, there should be all sorts of goodies, for us to peruse over the next week or so.

Darkroom Magazine.
NAPP have announced "Darkroom" a new publication aimed at users of Adobe Photoshop Lightroom. Although a publication date has not been announced, you can get more information by simply visiting and registering at Darkroom.

Fujifilm announce new cameras ahead of CES
Fuji Film have led the pack with product announcements for CES. New products include the IS-1 digital camera, which is aimed at the forensic, scientific and law enforcement market; the new 8 Megapixel F40fd and the FinePix A610 and FinePix A800.

Light Craft releases 2.0.6 update of LightZone.
The LightZone 2.0.6 update is available for Windows and Mac, and features improvements to its Zone System-based image editing and RAW conversion software which corrects the crop tool and includes fixes for several bugs. Visit LightCraft for the update.

Bruce Fraser to be honored at Macworld Expo

Photo and Design Emags

I've been finding a lot of free art, design and photography emags lately. Some of which you can download and some which are browser based. The beauty of these emagazines is that they use no paper and that they are really easy to use. I've been able to use mags in chinese without too much difficulty. Only frustration is that you need a computer to view them ... roll on umpc (Ultra Mobile PC).

Some of these mags, even emulate the whole page turning experience. I think however, that as cute as this is, it's only going to be a shortlived feature ... I soon grew tired of "turning" pages. I much prefer clicking in the corner or on a button. Check out 08SHOW, it's in chinese but should be fairly easy to follow.

Once I started exploring the site, I also came across a link to a photoshop weblog in German, where there were some really cool articles. It's well worth exploring so here's the link.

Nikon D40 Officially Announced

So the rumours going around the digital photography sites have proven to be right, Nikon officially announced the release of their new D40 D-SLR. This 6 megapixel plus baby is supposed be the smallest, lightest, easiest DSLR Nikon have made to date. Featuring In-Camera Editing, a 2.5 inch display, SD Card compatible and bundled with an 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor lens, it'll be worth checking out. At US$599 it could be on many shopping lists this Christmas.

Vaja Ivolution Silver for iPod video

For those of you who use your Ipod for storing your photos and other media, I've just received notification from Vaja Cases about their new Ivolution Silver, leather case for the Ipod Video. All I have to say is, wow, what a perfect gift for Christmas. Vaja have been making cases for all sorts of devices for a few years now, and in my mind they are one of the finest examples of a company understanding their customers needs and desires, that I've come across.

Plustek Opticfilm 7200i Review

I've just published a review of the Opticfilm 7200i film and slide scanner over at http://www.creativeimagingnews.com and at http://www.kickstartnews.com . This reasonably priced unit was a pleasant surprise and is well worth look. Although not quite good enough for the serious pro it will more than meet the needs of the enthusiast and amateur photographer.
